Oil to me is a beautiful medium in as much as the colors are luminous and remain so for many, many years (as opposed to watercolor, which is susceptible to fading if not looked after diligently).

The method I prefer is to first lay a ground or many colors down and then let them dry completely.  When dry, I put more layers and like to see the lower layer come faintly through.
